Star Group Veterans Helping Veterans had their annual Thanksgiving Bag Giveaway on Saturday, Nov 21, 2015.
The 370 bags were loaded with everything needed to make a Thanksgiving meal and waiting to be paired up with a turkey.
Copperas Cove and Killeen city council members joined representatives from state government offices, Cove Independent School District Superintendent Joe Burns, KISD Deputy Superintendent DesMontes Stewart, SG-VHV Premier Sponsors from Century 21/JR Rentals & Property Management and The Car Wash Barn as well as plenty of volunteers at the SG-VHV office in Copperas Cove to hand out the bags. “We’re going to touch some lives and we’re going to cross some county lines,” SG-VHV President Jonathan Haywood said to the volunteers. “Thank you for all you do in our community as our leaders and sponsors, which enables us to do what we do to tell people we love them at this special time of the year.
Bags went to Copperas Cove, Killeen, Harker Heights and Nolanville school districts for families in the HARP and other programs. Other bags went to Women, Infants and Children programs, chaplains on Fort Hood for junior soldiers, Disabled American Vets Chapter 29, AFGE 190, HH Vet Center, Cove Soup Kitchen and Bring Everyone in the Zone.
Dr Burns handed the first bag over to Dr Stewart as a symbol that while the nonprofit organization behind the meals may be located in Copperas Cove, caring for those in need has no boundaries.
“I think this is awesome — it’s great to have organizations out there like Star Group-Veterans Helping Veterans ensuring our families are able to enjoy a meal they otherwise not be able to,” said Stewart, a Waco native who began his current position with KISD in July. “There have been other volunteer opportunities I have been a part of, but never anything to this magnitude. This is awesome, and I look forward to a continued partnership with (SG-VHV).”
Cove Councilwoman Marty Smith said it was organizations such as SG-VHV which make Copperas Cove such a great place to live. “This year was even more awesome than the last,” Smith said. “Our heart is in the right place — there are people out there in need, and SG-VHV & Copperas Cove are excellent about helping those families. We’re working as a region here today and showing that we care about more than just ourselves.”
