Star Group-Veterans Helping Veterans kicked off its year of giving back to the community Saturday by introducing our 2016 Premier Corporate Sponsors and thanking them for their generosity in allowing the nonprofit to serve the community (see sg-vhv.org for links to sponsors website)
Premier Corporate sponsors pay $3,000 annually for advertising on the nonprofit’s website, a hole sponsorship for the annual SG-VHV golf tournament fundraiser, sponsorship o...f the annual picnic, support of annual Thanksgiving 350 basket giveaway and Christmas special need projects.
“We believe this organization is not just helping veterans, but also helping other people in our community,” said sponsor Ronnie Viss, owner of Scott’s Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. “We want to get behind them and support them the best we can. Our sponsorship helps out with every one of their activities and we’re happy to help them.”
Star Group-VHV president Jonathan Haywood then welcomed newcomers to the nonprofit visiting for the first time, telling them a bit about the organization.
“Many people get confused that the money we receive from these sponsors just goes to veterans,” Haywood said. “Seven veterans started this organization, which is where the Veterans Helping Veterans part of our name comes from. But we are not a veterans organization — we are a community-based organization. We help everyone, including veterans. It just so happens that 95 percent of Central Texas in this region happens to be veterans or family members of veterans.
Guest Speaker: Grace Wilhelm from the Ted Smith Law Group, who spoke about wills and how to ensure homeowners can leave their homes to surviving spouses or children after they die.  “Texas law now requires that every time a person dies without a will, an extra attorney has to be hired. That attorney has to be paid for by the family,” Wilhelm said.  “That attorney will go around and make sure there are no unknown heirs. It’s expensive and a very unnecessary process, when it’s so easy to just create a will. Especially for (veterans), because you can have it done for free.”

SG-VHV meet the first Saturday of each month at noon --- come out and join us!
